Supply, Surplus and Surface Project

Supply, Surplus and Surface Project

SSS Project Objective: College level students are encouraged to expand upon the most successful textures from the 10 x 10 project by taking the most interesting and experimental textures one step further. They create “surplus yardage” in muslin, based on their texture(s), then drape and build a garment on the dress form.

This student created yardage of a shag ribbon and a surplus of stuffed petals of a variety of sizes. From there, they pinned their material onto the dress form and hand sewed the material together.

This student crocheted and "felted" muslin with poly-fil. They draped and hand stitched their surplus until their desire garment was achieved.

Here the student used a method of deconstructing an existing collared shirt in order to use it as a pattern for their garment. They incorporated pleats and used facing and bias to finish their garment.

With yardage of different braided textures, this student draped all their yardage until their desired garment was achieved.

This student constructed a vest-like shell from a variety of different sized square pillow pockets and attached them to plastic boning to create volume and structure. The shell is ultimately fixed to a vest in order for the wearer to take it off and on.

Objective: The students learn how to make a variety of dresses from the same A-Line dress pattern. The goal of the project is to demonstrate how to manipulate a basic pattern, learn several fabric manipulations and how to properly pattern them, learn proper sewing order and professional sewing construction. Students are challenged based on their sewing level. They could only use 100% cotton. The garment constructed is designed for their college application portfolio.

Beginner student. They changed the neckline and opened the bodice. The origami flowers are starched cotton, hand sewing and grommets were used to attach flowers to the dress as their surface manipulation.

Advance student. They changed the neckline, added sleeves, opened the mid-draft, changed zipper location and added reverse appliqué and embroidery as their surface manipulation.

Advance student. They deconstructed the bodice, changed zipper location, added plastic boning to sleeves and hem of dress to change the silhouette and added beading and embroidery to the bodice as their surface manipulation.

Beginner student. They changed the neckline and opened the bodice. Charged style of dress from A-line to Circle skirt. Custom made a lined hooded cape and used a sewing machine manipulation in the bodice.

10x10x10 Muslin Manipulations

Objective: College level students used visual research to create textures by hand and sewing machine on muslin. They developed and explored hand manipulation techniques using only muslin and thread. The focus was to not decorating or creating ornamentation but to observe and mimic the 2D image into a 3D texture.

Five Look Collection

Objective: College level students develop a five look fashion collection based on their personal research, image collecting and sketching. They are also required to develop a croqui, a model template, based on the type of body and gender they ideally be designing for and collage a mood board.
